Jungle Atlantis and Angkor Wat

26 Sep 2014

Those with an appetite for documentaries about mysterious ancient ruins should make time to watch BBC2’s two-part Jungle Atlantis series.

Jungle Atlantis centres on Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. Built by the Khmer people of Cambodia, Angkor Wat was also once the centre of an ancient city which during its 12th-century peak, spanned an area larger than modern-day NYC and had a population of nearly three quarters of a million. London at that time was home to only 18,000.

Angkor Wat was abandoned 600 years ago and many of the huge structures they built were devoured by the jungle. Little is known about the kings who secured their vast empire or how they constructed its wonders. In this series, an international team of archaeologists and scientists use revolutionary technology to reveal the true scale and extent of the lost city of Angkor and to find out how its people lived and died.

Screened in two parts, the first episode was aired last night (25th September) and will be repeated at 18.30 on this coming Sunday. The second is scheduled for 8pm on Tuesday October 2nd and will be repeated on Sunday 5th October at 19.00.

If Jungle Atlantis whets your appetite and you would like to travel to South East Asia, Cambodia and Angkor Wat, contact us. There are several river cruise companies who organise spectacular trips along the Mekong River, plenty of guided tours and you can of course, travel independently. We had a fantastic time in Sicily. Thank you for your suggestion - so much more than we expected, lots of interesting places to visit and the hotels were excellent.

We felt as though we were away for ever and had not 1 but 3 holidays!

Thank you for organising our trip to the States. We had a fantastic time everywhere we went. Hotels were well chosen and were very clean and comfortable with just the right amount of luxury for two night stays. Transport links all worked smoothly and having Cape Cod as our final stay was perfect with wonderful accommodation and beautiful beaches. Many thanks for your guidance!

Thank you for arranging our trip to Athens. Hotel Hemes in Athens was a short walk away from everything we needed.

Carole

We had a great time in Kefalonia. The whole trip was very smooth and well organised by Ionian, and we would definitely use them again if going to that part of the world. We were also lucky with the weather, and even the hire car, as it appeared most of those who booked ahead of us had taken all the small cars leaving us with something slightly roomier and more powerful.

Phil

Living in Chorleywood, it gave us peace of mind to be able to speak directly to someone knowledgeable and book with a local Agent.
